Sumario:is paper explores the field of political discourse fromthe perspective of the press. Journalism is here considered as anactor that operates on and from a particular historic reality, withina certain social space that frequently implies confrontations, theestablishment of relationships with supporters and enemies, andwhich proposes a recurrent struggle between enunciators, due toits polemic dimension. is paper analyses journalistic documentsproduced between the 1850s and 1890s, with the aim of exploringthe evolution of the discourses that competed to hegemonize thefield, to analyze the strategies deployed in the performance ofthe mediation role that journalism fulfilled between civil societyand the State, and to detect the progressive transformation of thedifferent publics.
