Journalism is here considered as anactor that operates on and from a particular historic reality, withina certain social space that frequently implies confrontations, theestablishment of relationships with supporters and enemies, andwhich proposes a recurrent struggle between enunciators, due toits polemic dimension. is paper analyses journalistic documentsproduced between the 1850s and 1890s, with the aim of exploringthe evolution of the discourses that competed to hegemonize thefield, to analyze the strategies deployed in the performance ofthe mediation role that journalism fulfilled between civil societyand the State, and to detect the progressive transformation of thedifferent publics. Este artículo se propone penetrar en el campodiscursivo de lo político desde el lugar de la prensa, entendidacomo un actor que está operando en y sobre una realidad socialhistórica concreta, en el interior de un espacio que implicacon frecuencia enfrentamientos, relaciones con partidarios yenemigos, que propone una recurrente lucha entre enunciadores,mostrando su fuerte dimensión polémica. Realizando unrecorrido sobre la producción periodística entre la década de1850 y 1890, se apunta a explorar el devenir de los discursos quecompiten por hegemonizar el campo, analizar las estrategias quese despliegan en el desempeño de ese papel de mediación que elperiodismo debía cumplir entre la sociedad civil y el Estado ydetectar, finalmente, la progresiva transformación de lo públicos.
