The objective is to analyse how railways influenced in the birth or growth of certain towns and cities and how could its privatization affect them in an opposite way. Although population movements depend on various factors, being the railway only one of them, this article tries to perform a correlational approach, not seeking for causalities, looking at the relation between population changes and railway history in Jujuy. El presente trabajo se propone comparar los movimientos y la evolución de la población en las localidades de la provincia de Jujuy por donde circulaba el ferrocarril en tres momentos del desarrollo ferroviario: la llegada del servicio a la provincia, la nacionalización durante el primer peronismo y su privatización (que en Jujuy equivalió prácticamente a su desmantelamiento). El objetivo es analizar cómo el ferrocarril influyó en el surgimiento o crecimiento de determinados pueblos y ciudades con su llegada y auge, y cómo pudo haber impactado en sentido inverso con motivo de su privatización / desmantelamiento en Jujuy. Si bien los movimientos poblacionales obedecen a múltiples razones, sólo una de las cuales es el ferrocarril, se intenta una aproximación correlacional, no explicativa, de la vinculación entre dichos movimientos y los vaivenes de la historia ferroviaria en Jujuy.
