In these distant territories, the acceptance of maroons and deserters was only conditional, subject to the evolution of alliances and rivalries. Tanto el examen comparado de los itinerarios de dos fugitivos fracasados, el cimarrón James Jorobado y el desertor José María Aldana, como el análisis de las condiciones que favorecieron su huida y de las evoluciones que provocaron su fracaso permiten una reflexión sobre los numerosos matices que caracterizaban la sociedad fronteriza de la Florida a finales del siglo XVIII, dominado por el mundo indígena, en los confines de los imperios coloniales. En estos territorios lejanos, la aceptación de los cimarrones como de los desertores era solamente condicional, sometida a la evolución de las alianzas y rivalidades. Tanto o exame comparativo dos itinerários de dois fugitivos falhados, o fugitivo James Humpback e o desertor José María Aldana, como a análise das condições que favoreceram a sua fuga e os desenvolvimentos que causaram o seu fracasso permitem uma reflexão sobre as inúmeras nuances que caracterizaram a sociedade fronteiriça da Florida no final do século XVIII, dominada pelo mundo indígena, nos limites dos impérios coloniais. Nestes territórios longínquos, a aceitação dos quilombolas como desertores era apenas condicional, estando sujeita à evolução de alianças e rivalidades.
