| Sumario: | The study of the appointments of corregidores y alcaldes mayores in New Galicia reveals that merit and service remained indispensable conditions for those seeking to occupy these offices during the last decades of 17th century. These appointments were the responsibility of the governor of New Galicia without the intervention of the viceroy of New Spain. Even when in 1672 Madrid began the royal sale of appointments (beneficio) through the delivery of an amount to the Crown (donativo), most of corregimientos and alcaldías mayores remained in the hands of the local authorities. |
