Other two ethic characters –the “cocoliches” and fake Indians–, often sharing such performances with the gauchos, are also studied. The investigation concludes that, far from contributing to conservative, nationalist agendas and to the whitening discourses often related to the official gaucho cult, carnival gauchesque performances must be analyzed as part of popular criollismo, as they presented dissident visions and narratives of the nation and restored non-whiteness as part of Argentina. Este trabajo se propone contribuir al conocimiento sobre el criollismo tal como se manifestó en los carnavales de la ciudad de Buenos Aires en la segunda mitad del siglo XIX y comienzos del siguiente. Presenta un estudio e interpretación de las diversas performances gauchescas que se llevaban a cabo en ese contexto, que incluían disfraces, agrupaciones alusivas, canciones y danzas y otras recreaciones del mundo rural. Junto con la del gaucho, se investigan también otras dos figuras que los acompañaban: los “cocoliches” y los falsos indios. El trabajo concluye que, lejos de contribuir a los discursos nacionalistas y blanqueadores que la literatura suele relacionar con el culto al gaucho, las performances carnavalescas participaron de un criollismo popular que alimentaba visiones disidentes acerca de la nación que, además, reponían la presencia de lo no-blanco como parte de la Argentina. Este trabalho pretende contribuir para o conhecimento sobre o criollismo tal como se manifestava nos carnavais da cidade de Buenos Aires na segunda metade do século XIX e início do seguinte. Apresenta um estudo e interpretação das diversas performances gaúchas realizadas naquele contexto, que incluíam fantasias, grupos alusivos, cantos e danças e outras recriações do mundo rural. Ao lado do gaúcho, também são investigadas duas outras figuras que os acompanhavam: os "cocoliches" e os falsos índios. O trabalho conclui que, longe de contribuir com os discursos nacionalistas e branqueadores que a literatura costuma associar ao culto do gaúcho, os espetáculos carnavalescos participavam de um criollismo popular que alimentava visões dissidentes sobre a nação que, além disso, restabelecia a presença do não-branca como parte da Argentina.
