| Sumario: | During the early Modern Age, the Republic of Ragusa (present-day Dubrovnik, Croatia) kept an ambiguous geopolitical position — it paid tribute to the Ottoman Empire and, extra-officially, provided ships and crews to the Spanish Monarchy. This work analyses the situation of the foreign communities within the Iberian domains during the ‘first globalisation’ and the evolution of the studies on this topic, the relations between Ragusa and Spain and their historiographical treatment, and the careers of two Ragusan captains as a sample of the opportunities, experiences, rewards and losses in the life of these individuals who renounced their natural sovereign in order to serve the Catholic King. |
