This work analyses the situation of the foreign communities within the Iberian domains during the ‘first globalisation’ and the evolution of the studies on this topic, the relations between Ragusa and Spain and their historiographical treatment, and the careers of two Ragusan captains as a sample of the opportunities, experiences, rewards and losses in the life of these individuals who renounced their natural sovereign in order to serve the Catholic King. Durante la temprana Edad Moderna, la República de Ragusa (actual Dubrovnik, Croacia) mantuvo una posición geopolítica ambigua: pagaba tributo al Imperio otomano y, extraoficialmente, aportaba barcos y tripulaciones a la Monarquía hispánica. Este trabajo analiza la situación de las comunidades extranjeras en los dominios ibéricos en la “primera globalización” y la evolución de los estudios sobre esta temática, las relaciones entre Ragusa y España y su tratamiento historiográfico, y las carreras vitales recorridas por dos capitanes raguseos como muestra de las oportunidades, experiencias, recompensas y pérdidas que vivieron estos individuos que renunciaron a su soberano natural para servir al Rey Católico.
