The “840/ochocuarenta” is a widely used slang in the local field of sex markets studies. Those who enunciate it, mainly sex workers, clients and police officers, do so to refer to those who benefit economically from the prostitution of others. Used as a synonym for pimp, it is frequently mentioned in very old tangos and its origin is often attributed to an old police edict. Thus, this work tends to follow the “840”, trace its sources, interrogate its past and the ways in which it became a pimp or ruffian symbol. This work runs through three lines of inquiry: slang, tangos and the police. For this, I have carried out a bibliographical review, archive searches and interviews with key actors, all of which will lead us to try out some provisional answers and working hypotheses. |

El “840/ochocuarenta” forma parte de una jerga muy utilizada en el campo local de los estudios acerca del mercado del sexo. Quienes lo enuncian —principalmente, trabajadoras sexuales, clientes y policías— lo hacen para referirse a quien se beneficia económicamente de la prostitución ajena. Se utiliza como sinónimo de proxeneta, se dice que es lunfardo, que es nombrado en tangos muy antiguos y suele atribuirse su origen a un antiguo edicto policial. Así, este trabajo se propone seguir la pista del 840, rastrear sus fuentes, interrogar su pasado y las formas en que devino símbolo de proxeneta o rufián porque en la respuesta al cómo de este símbolo, a cómo es que llegó a ser, se cifran tramas de relaciones que echan luz —así como también plantean nuevos interrogantes— sobre el comercio sexual en la Argentina. Este trabajo discurre por tres líneas de indagación: el lunfardo, el tango y la policía. Para ello, he realizado un trabajo de revisión bibliográfica, de búsqueda en archivos y también de entrevistas a actores clave. ¿De dónde viene el 840? ¿Existió el edicto —del número en cuestión— que penaba a los proxenetas? Este artículo ensaya algunas respuestas (para nada acabadas) y propone, principalmente, una serie de hipótesis de trabajo. “840/840” faz parte de um jargão bastante utilizado no campo local de estudos sobre o mercado do sexo. Aqueles que o dizem – principalmente trabalhadores do sexo, clientes e polícias – fazem-no para se referir àqueles que beneficiam financeiramente da prostituição de outros. É usado como sinônimo de cafetão, diz-se que é lunfardo, que tem esse nome em tangos muito antigos e sua origem costuma ser atribuída a um antigo edital policial.Assim, este trabalho propõe-se seguir o rasto do 840, traçar as suas origens, interrogar o seu passado e as formas como se tornou símbolo de um cafetão ou rufião porque na resposta ao como deste símbolo, como surgiu, são criptografados.tramas de relacionamento que lançam luz – bem como levantam novas questões – sobre o comércio sexual na Argentina. Este trabalho segue três linhas de investigação: lunfardo, tango e polícia. Para isso, realizei uma revisão bibliográfica, uma busca em arquivos e também entrevistas com atores-chave. De onde vem 840? Havia um decreto – do número em questão – que punia os cafetões? Este artigo testa algumas respostas (de forma alguma terminadas) e propõe, principalmente, uma série de hipóteses de trabalho.
