description A review of the contemporary extreme right-wing variants and their links with the authoritarian tradition of the 20th century gives us a confusing map, somewhat blurred and with superimposed figures. The social sciences and history have serious problems in interpreting a phenomenon in full swing and for which the past is less useful than we usually admit. Uruguay, the longest-standing and most stable democracy of parties on the continent, is experiencing this process in its own way, which when viewed in more detail and without abandoning the comparative perspective, cannot be so easily described or interpreted. Approaching the Uruguayan process offers an analytical opportunity that can be summed up in a simple proposition and that it is not possible to generalize more than in a vague way, as usually happens with political history: radical right-wing movements advance and above all consolidate in proportion to the weakness of the party system on which they are based. Uruguayans have a limited politics, which is more comfortable for the deployment of extreme trajectories.

Las ciencias sociales y la historia tienen problemas serios para interpretar un fenómeno en pleno desarrollo y para el que el pasado resulta menos útil de lo que solemos admitir. Uruguay, la democracia de partidos más longeva y estable del continente experimenta a su manera este proceso, que mirado con más detalle y sin abandonar la mirada comparativa, no se deja describir ni interpretar tan fácilmente. Acercarse al proceso uruguayo ofrece una oportunidad analítica que puede resumirse en una proposición simple y que no es posible generalizar más que de una forma vaga, como suele ocurrir con la historia política: los movimientos radicales de derecha avanzan y sobre todo se consolidan en proporción a la debilidad del sistema de partidos en los que se asientan. La uruguaya es una política limitada para el despliegue cómodo de trayectorias extremas. Uma revisão das variantes contemporâneas de extrema direita e seus vínculos com a tradição autoritária do século XX nos devolve um mapa confuso, um tanto borrado e com figuras sobrepostas. As ciências sociais e a história têm sérios problemas para interpretar um fenômeno em pleno andamento e para o qual o passado é menos útil do que costumamos admitir. O Uruguai, a mais longeva e estável democracia de partidos do continente, vive à sua maneira esse processo, que, quando visto com mais detalhes e sem abandonar a perspectiva comparativa, não pode ser descrito ou interpretado com tanta facilidade. A abordagem do processo uruguaio oferece uma oportunidade analítica que pode ser resumida em uma proposição simples e que não é possível generalizar mais do que vagamente, como costuma acontecer com a história política: movimentos radicais de direita avançam e, sobretudo, consolidam proporcionalmente à fragilidade do sistema partidário em que se baseiam. A uruguaia é uma política limitada para o desdobramento confortável de trajetórias extremas.
