Our answer is positive, but it is conditional. Such a re-actualization must provide an answer to two well-founded criticisms that have been made of previous reenactments of this tradition: their risk of obtunding the transformative capacity of customs and traditions and their original dependence on a hierarchical ethos. Here, we will show that the creation and maintenance of a democratic society, which makes relational equality a fundamental value, requires a set of basic civic virtues and that these can be justified by reinforcing the critical potential of the virtues with respect to their formative context. El objetivo de este trabajo es evaluar si, en nuestras sociedades plurales, individualistas y asentadas en el lenguaje normativo de los derechos y los principios, existe un lugar valioso y posible para una reactualización de la tradición de las virtudes. Nuestra opinión es positiva, pero de una manera condicionada. Tal reactualización debe dar una respuesta a dos críticas bien fundadas que se han realizado a reactualizaciones previas: su riesgo de obturar la capacidad transformadora de las costumbres y tradiciones y su dependencia original respecto de un ethos jerárquico. Aquí mostraremos que la creación y mantenimiento de una sociedad democrática, que haga de la igualdad relacional un valor fundamental, requiere de un conjunto de virtudes cívicas básicas y que ellas pueden justificarse reforzando el potencial crítico de las virtudes respecto de su contexto de formación. O objetivo deste artigo é avaliar se, em nossas sociedades pluralistas e individualistas baseadas na linguagem normativa de direitos e princípios, há um lugar valioso e possível para um renascimento da tradição das virtudes. Nossa opinião é positiva, mas de forma condicional. Essa reatualização deve responder a duas críticas bem fundamentadas que foram feitas a reatualizações anteriores: seu risco de enfraquecer a capacidade transformadora de costumes e tradições e sua dependência original de um ethos hierárquico. Aqui mostraremos que a criação e a manutenção de uma sociedade democrática, que faz da igualdade relacional um valor fundamental, requer um conjunto de virtudes cívicas básicas e que elas podem ser justificadas pelo reforço do potencial crítico das virtudes em relação ao seu contexto de formação.
