Sumario:The article reviews some of the main ancient sources and the most outstanding characteristics of the  hortus conclusus topic to investigate the way in which the existing tension between a highly regulated representation from the rhetorical point of view with the expression of an experience involving all the senses and promoting the most varied emotions in the reader. The work takes into account the approaches of sensory history to understand and extend the study of the senses and emotions reflected in three works of the thirteenth century, given the fact of predominance in the medieval period of the theme in the choice of the authors. Along with the symbolic aspects, the relevance of the animal and plant world is underlined in the configuration of a sensory landscape that, by expressing emotions through the senses, mainly taste, smell and hearing, promote a positive affectivity that seeks the transcendence conceived as an anthropological ideal.
