It was used to house the indigenous population, then it began to house all the places that were considered unsuitable for an enlightened society: hospitals, cemeteries, asylums, insane institutions, informal markets and religious convents. Most of them, heterotopias, as Foucault defines it, and have remained as such for centuries. All of this has contributed to create a great urban heterotopia that is the neighborhood of La Chimba, which we will examine from the perspective of its literary imaginary through the work of José Donoso, and other authors, contrasting it with what has been its historical and urban development.
