It was used to house the indigenous population, then it began to house all the places that were considered unsuitable for an enlightened society: hospitals, cemeteries, asylums, insane institutions, informal markets and religious convents. Most of them, heterotopias, as Foucault defines it, and have remained as such for centuries. All of this has contributed to create a great urban heterotopia that is the neighborhood of La Chimba, which we will examine from the perspective of its literary imaginary through the work of José Donoso, and other authors, contrasting it with what has been its historical and urban development. La Chimba es uno de los barrios más antiguos de Santiago de Chile, un lugar que ha sido estigmatizado desde la conquista española, pues desde sus inicios estuvo destinado a albergar todo aquello que se consideraba incivilizado. Fue utilizado para albergar a la población indígena, luego comenzó a alojar todos aquellos lugares que no se consideraban aptos para una sociedad ilustrada: hospitales, cementerios, asilos, manicomios, mercados informales y conventos religiosos. La mayoría de ellos, heterotopías, como Foucault lo define, y así han permanecido como tales durante siglos. Todo ello ha contribuido a formar una gran heterotopía urbana, cual es el barrio de la Chimba, el que examinaremos desde la perspectiva de su imaginario literario a través de la obra de José Donoso, y otros autores, contrastándola con lo que ha sido su desarrollo histórico y urbano.
