The purpose is to specify the conceptual framework that underpins its understanding.  To this end, two explanatory approaches to environmental conflict are presented, the environmentalism of the poor and the conflict of environmental content. Then the case of the contamination of the Santiago River in the Salto is shown historically. The research involved an exhaustive search for information in the search engines of the UDG (University of Guadalajara), Google Scholar, CONRICYT, Scielo, Dialnet and the National Transparency Platform. About fifteen sources of information were located, which were disseminated under the following categories of analysis: "Río Santiago" AND "contamination", "Río Santiago" AND "El Salto", "El Salto" AND "environmental conflict". It was found that the problem reviewed here shares material elements that allow it to be characterized from both approaches. El objetivo de este artículo es identificar cuál enfoque explicativo permite caracterizar el conflicto por la contaminación del río Santiago en el Salto, Jalisco. La finalidad es precisar el marco conceptual que fundamenta su comprensión.  Para ello se presentan dos enfoques explicativos del conflicto ambiental, el ecologismo de los pobres y el conflicto de contenido ambiental. Después se muestra históricamente el caso de la contaminación del río Santiago en el Salto. La investigación significó una búsqueda exhaustiva de información en los buscadores de la UDG (Universidad de Guadalajara), Google Scholar, CONRICYT, Scielo, Dialnet y la Plataforma Nacional de Transparencia. Se localizaron cerca de quince fuentes de información, mismas que se diseminaron bajo las siguientes categorías de análisis: “Río Santiago” AND “contaminación”, “Río Santiago” AND “El Salto”, “El Salto” AND “conflicto ambiental”. Se halló que el problema aquí revisado comparte elementos materiales que permiten caracterizarlo desde ambos enfoques.
