Sumario:Until a few years ago, it was claimed that in Syria had existed two phases of urbanization, the rst during the second half of the 4th millennium, and the second at the middle of the 3rd, which includes the region of Palestine. From this situation it was posed a structural diference between both urbanizations, the rst being more linked to irrigational agriculture of the southern Mesopotamia and the organization of the temple, and the second to dry-farming and the organization of the palace. However, recent excavations shows that during the first half of the 4th millennium important urban settlements already existed in Syria, and they also appeared earlier in both Lebanon and Palestine. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate that Syria shared the same trends towards urbanization as other regions of the Near East, due to the multiple contacts they had for a long time, but that its rhythm depended on local conditions, so instead of two phases we prefer to talk about the same urbanization process, whose culmination came only in the middle of the Early Bronze Age.
