Despite the children remaining under state control for a period, the law had a significant impact on transforming the legal and social status of many in Brazil, as from its enactment, they began to be born free. This substantially contributed to the abolition movement. This article explores arguments highlighting the importance of both the Free Womb Law and the Slave Emancipation Fund in the dismantling process of the Brazilian slave system.
