With an eclectic profile and a foundation education in philosophy, but early dedicated to sociology in the stage of institutionalization and consolidation of the discipline at a national level, Verón was a protagonist in the foundation of Argentine semiotics and became an international reference in the field. Reflections on the place of observation –as a primary and unavoidable activity of all scientific work in any area– and of the observer in social research are a basic aspect of his work. At the same time, they have been a heuristic motor for the formulation of his sociosemiotics. Therefore, the lines presented here are intended to contribute to the understanding of the epistemological assumptions involved in the work of an author and, both, nourish contemporary discussions about the way in which knowledge accredited as scientific is produced about human behavior – and its various manifestations. En este artículo se reconstruye la teorización de Eliseo Verón respecto del punto de vista que debe adoptar el analista-observador en el marco de su teoría de los discursos sociales, identificando cuatro momentos. Con un perfil ecléctico y formación de base en filosofía, pero tempranamente dedicado a la sociología en la etapa de institucionalización y consolidación de la disciplina a nivel nacional, Verón fue protagonista en la fundación de la semiótica argentina y se constituyó como un referente internacional del campo. Las reflexiones acerca del lugar de la observación –como actividad primordial e ineludible de toda labor científica en cualquier área– y del observador en las investigaciones sociales son un aspecto basal en su obra. Al mismo tiempo, han sido un motor heurístico para la formulación de su sociosemiótica. Por lo tanto, se aspira a que las líneas aquí expuestas contribuyan a la comprensión de los supuestos epistemológicos implicados en la obra de un autor y, a la vez, nutran las discusiones contemporáneas sobre el modo en que se produce conocimiento acreditado como científico sobre el comportamiento humano –y sus diversas manifestaciones.
