Historical documentary records attest to their severity, their physical consequences, and the political projects they generated: changes in the city and infrastructure projects. The San Juan River Valley (Tulum and Ullún-Zonda) is home to almost the entire population of San Juan, along with its earthquake-resistant homes. The earthquakes of 1894, 1944, and 1977, the most devastating on record, produced a series of immediate urban changes and prompted a search for solutions to their destructive effects. This paper explores the historical documentary evidence from a different perspective, establishing the relationship between earthquake, city, and urban change.
