An epistemological transformation is taking place in the definition of disciplinary fields: the definition of their limits is in doubt. The practice of inter and transdiscipline makes them diffuse and mobile. It occurs in all sciences. In the case of historical archaeology it is possible to consider it because there are three positions in this regard: all archaeology is historical, its nature is shared with the Earth sciences, its development requires defining its subordination -or the inverse- its supremacy over historical documentation, even its prescience. Probably, the thematic versatility exhibited by the articles in this issue of the Journal suggests that there is another type of dilemma: where are they and what are their limits?

This first volume of the year 2021 presents a series of conferences that were part of the IX Symposium on Latin American Historical Archeology held virtually in November 2020. The speakers present various topics, such as theoretical and methodological issues in historical archeology, results of their studies, new avenues of research, as well as digital proposals for the treatment and access to heritage. En el caso de la arqueología histórica cabe plantearlo porque existen tres posiciones al respecto: toda arqueología es histórica, su naturaleza es compartida con las ciencias de la Tierra, su desarrollo requiere definir su subordinación –o lo inverso- su supremacía sobre la documentación histórica, incluso su prescindencia.
