Successful inter-state collaboration in such sectors (energy, security, organized crime, shared natural resources, among others) is rare and highly conflictive. Attempts are often frustrated or perish in time. Even less feasible is the creation and maintenance of international institutions in these types of international policy sectors. Here the Brazilian-Argentine Agency for Accounting and Control of Nuclear Materials (ABACC) takes on notable empirical relevance. Its uninterrupted operation from its creation in 1991 to the present-day places it as an atypical case at a global level. This essay aims to describe and analyze the functioning of ABACC. It is hoped that it will arouse interest and motivate more academics and practitioners in the field to analyze it from interdisciplinary perspectives. Los Estados cooperan sobre áreas sensibles de política internacional que podrían poner en riesgo su soberanía nacional e integridad territorial. La colaboración interestatal exitosa en este tipo de sectores (energía, seguridad, crimen organizado, recursos naturales compartidos, entre otros), resulta poco frecuente y sumamente conflictiva. Los intentos suelen frustrarse o perecer en el tiempo. Menos factible aún es la creación y el mantenimiento de instituciones internacionales en este tipo de sectores de política internacional. Es aquí que la Agencia Brasileño – Argentina de Contabilidad y Control de Materiales Nucleares (ABACC), cobra notable relevancia empírica. Su funcionamiento ininterrumpido desde su creación en el año 1991 hasta el presente, la posiciona como un caso atípico a nivel global. El presente comentario tiene por objetivo describir y analizar el funcionamiento de la ABACC. Se espera que despierte interés y motive a más académicos y profesionales del área a analizarla desde enfoques interdisciplinarios.
