| Sumario: | In 2015, the so-called “refugee crisis” reached its most critical point when thousands of people fled their countries of origin, and went, among other destinations, to the European continent in search of international protection. However, the member States of the European Union were characterized by carrying out an anti-migration policy. In this context, Angela Merkel stressed that Germany had a “humanitarian responsibility” to help refugees, manifesting, through foreign policy, the image of the State as an important "immigration country". The chancellor’s leadership and her own diplomatic style helped to develop a more welcoming policy towards refugees. But also to manifest a national identity based on “differentiation with its past'', which guided a new facet of German foreign policy centered on values. |
