Sumario:This article analyzes the historical development of technical-vocational education in Mexico from the end of the 19th century to 2020. For this purpose, a bibliographic review of secondary sources was carried out to identify the key moments, the most relevant institutions and the structural transformations that have shaped this subsystem. The study focuses on technological institutes, due to their relevance in the historical configuration of technological higher education. It was identified that technical education, in addition to providing job skills, has also generated inequalities. It is concluded that technical-professional education has been an essential component of the national education system, as well as for the development of the country. However, its capacity to influence equity and social mobility has been limited.
