For this purpose, a bibliographic review of secondary sources was carried out to identify the key moments, the most relevant institutions and the structural transformations that have shaped this subsystem. The study focuses on technological institutes, due to their relevance in the historical configuration of technological higher education. It was identified that technical education, in addition to providing job skills, has also generated inequalities. It is concluded that technical-professional education has been an essential component of the national education system, as well as for the development of the country. However, its capacity to influence equity and social mobility has been limited. En este artículo se analiza el desarrollo histórico de la educación técnico-profesional en México, desde finales del siglo XIX hasta el año 2020. Para ello, se realizó una revisión bibliográfica de fuentes secundarias que permitió identificar los momentos clave, las instituciones más relevantes y las transformaciones estructurales que han configurado este subsistema. El estudio se enfoca en los institutos tecnológicos, debido a su relevancia en la configuración histórica de la educación superior tecnológica. Se identificó que la educación técnica, además de habilitar para el trabajo, también ha generado desigualdades. Se concluye que la educación técnico-profesional ha sido un componente esencial del sistema educativo nacional, así como para el desarrollo del país. Sin embargo, su capacidad para incidir en la equidad y en la movilidad social ha sido limitado.
