description This article addresses the methodology deployed by Geertz in Negara's historical ethnography of the theater-state in Bali during the nineteenth century. To do so, it reconstructs the complexities and difficulties of this research, based on the author's singular gaze, from an analysis of the use of sources, the comparisons between past and present and the emergence of Geertz's own "intertextual" anthropological authority. From there, it focuses on the theatrical metaphor with which the methodological difficulties of the text are solved and the and the politics of Bali are interpreted. Such metaphor is developed through three key dimensions: space -with its divisions and relationships, such as outside/inside or core/periphery-, the symbolic -in the specular play of scenarios and status symbols- and power -(re)produced with pomp in rituals and ceremonies-. This theoretical-methodological centrality of the theatrical metaphor is as much a contribution to the dense Geertzian description as to historical-anthropological study, although it finds its limitations in that which cannot be analyzed by means of such a metaphor.

Este artículo aborda la metodología desplegada por Geertz en la etnografía histórica Negara sobre el Estado-teatro en Bali durante el siglo XIX. Para ello, se reconstruyen las complejidades y dificultades de esta investigación basada en la singular mirada del autor, desde un análisis del uso de las fuentes, las comparaciones entre pasado y presente y la emergencia de la autoridad antropológica “intertextual” del propio Geertz. A partir de allí, se focaliza en la metáfora teatral con la cual se solventan las dificultades metodológicas del texto y se interpreta la política de Bali. Tal metáfora se desarrolla mediante tres dimensiones claves: el espacio –con sus divisiones y relaciones, como afuera/adentro o centro/periferia–, lo simbólico –en el juego especular de escenarios y símbolos de estatus– y el poder –(re)producido con la pompa en los rituales y ceremonias–. Esta centralidad teórico-metodológica de la metáfora teatral supone tanto un aporte a la descripción densa geertziana como a un estudio histórico-antropológico, aunque encuentra sus limitaciones en aquello que no puede ser analizado mediante tal metáfora. Este artigo discute a metodologia utilizada por Geertz na histórica etnografia do teatro-estado de Negara, em Bali, durante o século XIX. Para isso, se reconstruam as complexidades e dificuldades desta pesquisa com base no olhar singular do autor, a partir de uma análise do uso das fontes, das comparações entre passado e presente e do surgimento da própria autoridade antropológica "intertextual" de Geertz. Seguidamente, se focaliza na metáfora teatral com a qual as dificuldades metodológicas do texto são resolvidas e as políticas de Bali são interpretadas. Esta metáfora é desenvolvida através de três dimensões-chave: o espaço -com suas divisões e relações, tais como exterior/inferior ou centro/periferia-; o simbólico -no jogo especular de cenários e símbolos de status-; e o poder -(re)produzido com pompa em rituais e cerimónias. Esta centralidade teórico-metodológica da metáfora teatral é tanto uma contribuição para a descrição densa de Geertz quanto para um estudo histórico-antropológico, embora tenha suas limitações naquilo que não pode ser analisado por meio dessa metáfora.
