The scientist's contributions have been lasting and multiple; here is highlighted his challenge -not yet solved- to look for "structure" in the images inscribed in ceramic vessels, stone vessels and woods carved by pre-Hispanic indigenous societies. The search for structures (and structuralism) currently raises concrete paradoxes related to language, signs and their references. But they are not less than those that emerge under the cover of the epistemology of interpretation. Este artículo bosqueja el pensamiento de Alberto Rex González sobre arte arqueológico formativo del noroeste argentino. El aporte de este científico ha sido múltiple y duradero; aquí se destaca el desafío –no respondido todavía- de buscar “estructura” en las imágenes inscriptas en vasos cerámicos, recipientes de piedra y maderas talladas por las sociedades indígenas prehispánicas. La búsqueda de estructuras (y el estructuralismo) suscita actualmente paradojas concretas relacionadas con el lenguaje, los signos y sus referencias. Pero ellas no son menores a las que emergen al amparo de la epistemología de la interpretación. Este artigo traça o pensamento de Alberto Rex González sobre a arte arqueológica formativa do noroeste da Argentina. As contribuições do cientista foram duradouras e múltiplas; aqui se destaca seu desafio -ainda não resolvido- de buscar "estrutura" nas imagens inscritas em vasos de cerâmica, vasos de pedra e madeiras esculpidas por sociedades indígenas pré-hispânicas. A busca por estruturas (e estruturalismo) atualmente levanta paradoxos concretos relacionados à linguagem, aos signos e suas referências. Mas não são menos do que aqueles que emergem sob o manto da epistemologia da interpretação.
