I employ a variety of theoretical perspectives to address the sometimes productive and sometimes conflictual relationships between Bildgunsroman theories and the cultural product known as the graphic novel, including texts chosen as examples that challenge the white, heterosexual, able-bodied male subject as the norm of the genre with new representations, and themes associated with contemporary Bildgunsroman as a way of thinking about the current tensions between globalization and national identities. En una aproximación que busca trascender el protagonismo de la literatura y el cine en los estudios culturales, este artículo encuadra desde el cómic algunas de las rutas tomadas por el Bildgunsroman y el Künstlerroman (la “novela de artista”) en América Latina contemporánea a partir de dos novelas gráficas que marcan las etapas de la ópera prima y el momento actual en la carrera de la colombo-ecuatoriana PowerPaola: Virus tropical (2009) y Todas las bicicletas que tuve (2022). Empleo una variedad de perspectivas teóricas para abordar las relaciones en ocasiones productivas y a veces conflictivas entre las teorías del Bildgunsroman y el producto cultural conocido como novela gráfica, incluyendo los textos elegidos como ejemplos que desafían al sujeto masculino, heterosexual, capaz y blanco, como norma del género con nuevas representaciones, y temas asociados al Bildgunsroman contemporáneo como forma de pensar las tensiones actuales entre globalización e identidades nacionales.
