The argumentation begins by shedding light on an intertextual dialogue with fantastic short stories from the nineteenth century and afterwards shows that the thematizations of an instant of shock and empathy stand in for an immanent core from which history is configured. This core allows to reconstruct the fictional treatment of history and memory and, lastly, leads to an ethics of memory and its antagonistic stance towards an illustrated conception of history. El mal y la violencia, temas recurrentes en las narrativas de Roberto Bolaño, son impensables sin el motor histórico que las despliega. La historia los envuelve y así se vuelve el elemento clave de la poética bolañesca que aquí se explora con una lectura de Monsieur Pain. En la siguiente argumentación primero se pone de relieve un diálogo intertextual con la cuentística fantástica decimonónica y después se muestra cómo las tematizaciones del instante de irrupción de lo fantástico engarzan con las ideas de conmoción y conmoverse para plantear un núcleo inmanente desde el que se configura y reconfigura la historia. A partir de este núcleo se reconstruye el tratamiento ficcional que se da a la historia y a la memoria hasta llegar, por último, a una discusión sobre una ética de la representación en pugna con una visión ilustrada de la historia.
