Drawing on Mythologies by Barthes, I will explore this phenomenon and distinguish the substantive side of democracy from the one that is functional to the neo-liberal ideology. I will then analyze the idea of democracy that emerges from Expo-Sevilla 1992 and from the radio chronicles by Pedro Lemebel. In the first case, the iceberg and the supermarket offering national resources suggest the idea of a democracy of consumerism, in a country that has been mythically refunded and completely sanitized from its bloody past. In the second case, myth – following its original meaning of “narration” – weaves a diverse national story inspired in democracy as social equality and community link, resulting in a mythification of marginality. En este artículo me propongo explorar los procesos de mitificación que han interesado el concepto de democracia en la Transición Chilena, tanto en su dimensión política como en sus expresiones artístico-culturales. A la luz de las consideraciones que Barthes hace en Mitologías, reflexionaré sobre el constituirse de la democracia como mito en su vertiente procedimental (funcional al neoliberismo) y en su vertiente sustantiva. Pasaré luego a analizar la idea de democracia que emerge de la Expo-Sevilla 1992 y de las crónicas radiales de Pedro Lemebel. En el primer caso, el témpano de hielo y el supermercado de bienes nacionales están pensados para sugerir la idea una democracia de los consumos en un país míticamente re-fundado y sanitizado con respecto a su pasado sangriento; en el segundo, el mito en su sentido originario de narración teje un relato nacional alterno que reivindica la democracia en tanto equidad social y lazo comunitario, así como mitifica las realidades marginales.
