From the title (Bibe aquam de cisterna tua), Groussac evaluates the work of Echeverría in relation to the problem of the constitution of national literature: on the one hand, almost all his work as a writer and thinker, determined by imitation and plagiarism; on the other hand, almost alone, “the happy exception of ‘La cautiva’”. This article explores the ways in which the theses of the French critic discuss the ideas of Juan Maria Gutiérrez (first critic, biographer and editor of the complete works of Echeverría) and it analyses the operations by which Groussac build a position of enunciation whose features will be present in his future work En este artículo se analiza un manuscrito en su mayor parte inédito (fechado en 1882) de Paul Groussac, enteramente dedicado a la vida y la obra de Esteban Echeverría. Desde el epígrafe (Bibe aquam de cisterna tua), Groussac evalúa la obra echeverriana en relación con el problema de la constitución de una literatura nacional: de un lado, casi toda su obra como escritor y pensador, signada por la imitación o el plagio; del otro, y casi en soledad, “la feliz excepción de ‘La cautiva’”. Se busca dar cuenta de las formas en que las tesis del crítico francés discuten con las de Juan María Gutiérrez (primer crítico, biógrafo y editor de las obras completas de Echeverría) y asimismo examinar las operaciones mediante las cuales se construye una posición de enunciación propia cuyos rasgos atravesarán su obra posterior.
