Between beauty contests and carnival groups. Tensions about the black ethnicity representation in Casanare, Llanos orientales, Colombia.

Before the 1970s, in the Casanare department located in the Llanos Orientales macro-region of Colombia, there was not a large presence of a population identified ethnically as black. Just like in the rest of the region, most of the people have been self-characterized as blanca-mestiza (white-mestizo) and llanera, a word representing the implicit condition of cowboys. The appearance of activities like oil exploitation as well as agroindustry derived from the African palm or oil palm became a pole of attraction for black people coming from the Colombian Pacific and Caribbean coasts. Today, there are several generations of afrocolombians born and grown in the region. The results shown in this paper are the partial product of a research originated in the invitations of the afrodescending community of the towns Villanueva and Monterrey in the forementioned department, who asked the authors to accompany them in the celebrations of cultural and gastronomic encounters commemorating the afrocolombianity. Some of the experiences lived are partly recounted and some events are analyzed in order to understand the way in which these communities have evolved in an environment unknown for them, as well as the way in which the Ley 70 of 1993 has affected this situatio.
