| Sumario: | During 2013 and 2014, self-defense groups emerged in a number of municipalities of the state of Michoacán, Mexico. Through the use of game theory, this paper reconstructs the interaction between Michoacán’s society of Tierra Caliente and the drug trafficking groups -Los Valencia, Los Zetas, La Familia, Los Caballeros Templarios- that dominated the region. The history of this interaction is divided into three historical processes, each characterized by a different situational logic. The change in preferences, which is a product of the change in situational logic, ultimately explains the emergence of the self-defence groups. |
