This methodology yields a better understanding of Giddens’ texts. Furthermore, the paper seeks to draw out the social implications of this ongoing debate between postmodern authors. An attempt is made to deepen where Gidden’s critical points of debate appear in relation to the postmodernists, indicating that though in some cases we are facing deep differences, a closer analysis shows that these differences are only about nuances or how a social issue is approached. In times of precarious and profound social change, it seems relevant to also understand these debates in terms of freedom and social change. El siguiente trabajo plantea como objetivo una presentación general de las ideas de Giddens en torno a lo social, expresado en términos de confianza básica, sistemas expertos y políticas de riesgo, recorriendo metodológicamente sus principales textos, contrastados a su vez con otros (desde otras disciplinas) que permiten una nueva aproximación a los mismos. A su vez se busca indagar qué implica en términos sociales su debate con autores postmodernos. Se intenta profundizar en dónde aparecen los puntos críticos de debate de Giddens en relación a los posmodernistas, indicándose que en algunos casos estamos ante diferencias profundas, pero en otros, solo se trata de matices o de cómo se enfoca la cuestión social. En tiempos que se entiende, son de precariedad y profundo cambio social, parece relevante entender estos debates también en términos emancipatorios y de cambio social.
