To get closer to them, we will rely on the "Antecedents of the Conflict" of the Rattenbach Report, on the testimonial statements, documents collected and produced by the Commission for the Analysis and Evaluation of the Responsibilities of the South Atlantic Conflict, which are attached to the Report. Final, as well as in other documents. Since profusely has been written on the subject over the course of four decades, we will try to address events from the time of the Final Report. Without intending to close the debate, we will focus on the reaction and the appreciation made by the government, at the time of making the decision, seeking to reveal that the rationality for the use of military power does not constitute per se an invalid strategic option. Its invalidity arises when the decisions come from reactions, provoked by the antagonist, that prevail over a rational appreciation of reality. Este artículo explora las circunstancias que rodearon la decisión adoptada por la conducción estratégica nacional, en la etapa previa a la confrontación armada entre la República Argentina y el Reino Unido de la Gran Bretaña e Irlanda del Norte. Para acercarnos a ellas, nos apoyaremos en los “Antecedentes del Conflicto” del Informe Rattenbach, en las declaraciones testimoniales, documentos recabados y producidos por la Comisión para el Análisis y Evaluación de las Responsabilidades del Conflicto del Atlántico Sur, que se encuentran anexados al Informe Final, como así también, en otros documentos. Dado que en el transcurso de cuatro décadas se ha escrito profusamente sobre el tema, procuraremos abordar los sucesos desde la contemporaneidad del Informe Final. Sin pretender cerrar el debate, nos enfocaremos en la reacción y en la apreciación realizada por el Poder Ejecutivo Nacional, al momento de tomar la decisión, buscando develar que la racionalidad para el empleo del poder militar, no constituye per se una opción estratégica inválida. Su invalidez surge cuando las decisiones provienen de reacciones, provocadas por el antagonista, que se imponen a una apreciación racional de la realidad.
