In this context, Pope Francis must restore the governance of the Vatican and, fundamentally, reverse the crisis of papal legitimacy. Along with the decline of the catholic Church, the West is going through a deep crisis of its democratic institutions. This article proposes to approach the pontificate of Francis in the framework of the crisis in the West. With this, an attempt will be made to decipher possible resonances in the ecclesiology of Francis for the crisis of western democracies. La renuncia de Benedicto XVI y la elección de Francisco están signadas por la crisis. La crisis de gobernabilidad de la monarquía vaticana produjo la abdicación del alemán y la posterior llegada del argentino. En ese contexto, el papa Francisco deberá restituir la gobernabilidad del Vaticano y, fundamentalmente, revertir la crisis de legitimidad papal.  A la par de la decadencia de la Iglesia católica, Occidente atraviesa una profunda crisis de sus instituciones democráticas. Este artículo propone abordar el pontificado de Francisco en el marco de la crisis de Occidente.
