He was a modest landowner and tenant, who from the command of the National Guard and the border army, managed to become an important mitrista leader in the countryside. He did not build his authority by being a career military man, but rather stood out for his expertise in border warfare, his ability to gather and lead men, his leadership skills, and his extensive knowledge of the territory. After the mitrista withdrawal from the national and provincial governments, he was removed from the army and the command of the National Guard. Through this case, we will problematize certain aspects of the social and military order on the frontier, as well as some issues related to the relationship between the national, provincial, and local levels during the context of state building.   En este artículo estudiamos la carrera militar de Benito Machado en la frontera sur de Buenos Aires entre 1852 y 1872. Fue un modesto propietario y arrendatario, que desde la comandancia de la Guardia Nacional y del ejército de la frontera, logró transformarse en un importante dirigente mitrista en el sur de la campaña. No construyó su autoridad por ser un militar de carrera, sino más bien se destacó por su pericia en la guerra de frontera, por su capacidad para reunir y dirigir hombres, por tener aptitudes para el liderazgo y por poseer un amplio conocimiento del territorio. Tras el alejamiento del mitrismo de los gobiernos nacional y provincial, fue apartado del ejército y de la comandancia de la Guardia Nacional. A través de este caso, problematizaremos ciertos aspectos del orden social y militar en la frontera, como así también algunas cuestiones vinculadas a la relación entre lo nacional, lo provincial y lo local durante el contexto de la construcción estatal.
