This article aims to reflect on the history and contemporary role of the architecture, design, and urban planning archive of the Department of Documentation and Information (DDI) at the Institute of History, which is part of the Faculty of Architecture, Design, and Urbanism of the University of the Republic—the only archive of this kind in Uruguay. It is essential to consider the transformative role of knowledge offered by a university archive that, in addition to receiving, cataloging, preserving, enriching, and communicating documents related to design disciplines, it also develops teaching, research, outreach, and dissemination activities. From this standpoint, the article seeks to analyze the current role of architecture and design archives in the construction of knowledge, the generation of synergies enabling the acquisition of new content, and the ongoing interaction with both the academic community and the society at large. Some mediation and knowledge production practices carried out by the DDI—as well as the tensions and challenges it faces when aligning its work with the university’s core functions—serve as examples that highlight the importance of ensuring public access as well as the critical activation of archival collections with a view toward both local and regional contexts. Este artículo se propone reflexionar sobre la historia y el papel contemporáneo del archivo de arquitectura, diseño y urbanismo del Departamento de Documentación e Información (DDI) del Instituto de Historia, perteneciente a la Facultad de Arquitectura, Diseño y Urbanismo de la Universidad de la República, el único de su tipo en Uruguay. Resulta fundamental pensar el rol de transformación del saber que ofrece un archivo universitario que suma a las tareas de recepcionar, catalogar, conservar, enriquecer y comunicar documentos vinculados a las disciplinas del proyecto, el desarrollo de actividades de enseñanza, investigación, extensión y difusión. A partir de esta situación particular, se propone analizar el papel actual de los archivos de arquitectura y diseño en la construcción de conocimiento, en la generación de sinergias que permiten la captación de nuevos contenidos y la retroalimentación constante con la comunidad académica y la sociedad. Algunas prácticas de mediación y producción de conocimiento desarrolladas por el DDI, así como las tensiones y desafíos que enfrenta al articular su labor con las funciones universitarias, sirven de ejemplo para poner en evidencia la importancia de garantizar, desde lo público, el acceso y la activación crítica del acervo con proyección tanto al contexto local como regional.
