Being internationally recognized, critics have broadly pointed out its work as one of the most important examples of the Architecture Collective’s movement, a somewhat problematic concept used to characterize practices attempting to become alternatives to conventional mechanisms of architectural production, and which are also interested in spatial agency and activism. Throughout the text, some early years’ key moments of this office will be emphasized, carefully observing how the dissemination, circulation and reception of the work have occurred within the mediatic and institutional circuits, and how this framework has simultaneously developed interpretative categories. In this way, it is intended to shed light on the construction of the conceptualization of this architecture collective.This contribution -far from trying to make a totalizing synthesis of the concept and its emergence- seeks to unravel the media-institutional framework that provides meaning and validation for this particular mode of space production. At the same time, it also intends to raise questions about the operability of this category in our contemporary context. El presente artículo se centra en los primeros años de trayectoria de Al Borde Arquitectos, oficina establecida por David Barragán y Pascual Gangotena en 2007 en Quito. Reconocida a nivel internacional, la crítica ha coincidido en señalarla como uno de los mayores exponentes del movimiento de los colectivos de arquitectura, noción un tanto problemática empleada para caracterizar praxis alternativas al modo de producción de arquitectura convencional, que se interesan por el agenciamiento espacial y el activismo.A lo largo del texto, se hará hincapié en algunos episodios clave de los primeros años de esta oficina, observando con atención cómo han sido la difusión, circulación y recepción de su obra, dentro de circuitos institucionales y mediáticos, que iban construyendo simultáneamente categorías interpretativas. Se pretende, de esta forma, iluminar la formación de la conceptualización de este colectivo de arquitectura.Lejos de intentar realizar una síntesis totalizadora del concepto y su emergencia, en esta comunicación se busca contribuir a desentrañar el entramado mediático-institucional que produce sentido y validación de este particular modo de producción del espacio. Se pretende, a la vez, plantear interrogantes sobre la operatividad de esta categoría en el contexto contemporáneo.
