Along with a comprehensive education plan that included school building among its budget lines, planning methods and prefabricated building were studied and implemented because they implied work speed and cost reduction. This gave rise to a change in the way of conceiving the design processes of the schools and their authors. This study explores the impact of research and planning practices for school design based on prefabricated building systems. Through the analysis of the work carried out by Chile’s Sociedad Constructora de Establecimientos Educacionales in the 1960s and 1970s, it can be asserted that a new architect profile began to play a role in the architecture workshop: the planner-researcher. Halfway between a professional and an expert, this architect not only focused on design but also ventured into research on planning and assessment of industrialized prebabricated building systems.
