Among them, the works of Rafael Iglesia and Solano Benítez are highlighted. Both architects have dealt with material and structural forms that are part of building itself. While emphasizing constructability, they develop a critical approach to contemporary architectural culture. Leaving aside the already extemporaneous notions of regionalism and identity, their works embody topics and concerns that interact with a conceptual spectrum which shows a strained relationship with the notion of tectonics. They account for technical knowledge, some sort of construction ethics and faithfulness to a consciously optimistic search for the reciprocal relationship between resources and challenges. Each one of the commissions entails an opportunity to explore, revalue and give a new meaning to the conditions of production. Thus, Iglesia and Benítez propose renewed questions and discuss ways of conceiving and doing architecture that nourish the permanent elaboration of a disciplinary knowledge which conveys the support and commitment of the builder’s craft. The aim of this analysis is to reflect on the role played by constructability in the recent architectures of Iglesia and Benítez. Both of them envisage their discipline as a form of unfinished universal knowledge. Desde fines de la década de 1990, en el cono sur de América Latina se registran obras de arquitectura que problematizan aspectos asociados a la estructura y la construcción. Entre ellas, destacan las producciones de Rafael Iglesia y Solano Benítez, quienes exploran formas materiales y estructurales en el mismo acto de la construcción. Poniendo el acento en la constructividad, estos autores elaboran un enfoque crítico sobre la cultura arquitectónica contemporánea. Sorteando las ya extemporáneas nociones de regionalismo e identidad, sus obras encarnan temas y problemas que dialogan con un espectro conceptual tensionado por la noción de tectónica. Sus obras dan cuenta de un saber técnico, de una suerte de ética de la construcción y de cierta fidelidad a una búsqueda conscientemente optimista en la recíproca relación entre recursos y desafíos. Ante cada encargo constituyen una oportunidad de exploración, puesta en valor y resignificación de las condiciones de producción. De esta manera, formulan preguntas renovadas y discuten modos de pensar y hacer arquitectura que nutren la elaboración permanente de un saber disciplinar sostenido y comprometido por el oficio de quien construye. Este trabajo procura aportar reflexiones acerca del rol de la constructividad en las arquitecturas recientes de Iglesia y Benítez, quienes conciben a la disciplina como una forma de conocimiento universal inacabada.
