Throughout history we can see that while some architectural works are envisaged from the prevailing view of the “full”, others are grounded on that of the “empty” as a positive composition feature. However, whether one case or the other, it is the architect’s graphic representation that plays a key role when emphasizing either of them. In particular, I refer to initial sketches or conceptual diagrams which are not intended to represent constructive facts but reflection frameworks as parts of the design process. I deal mainly with the art of poché and its use before and after Beaux Arts teaching -even in contemporary architectural works- and how this technique enables the architect to have a different space-envision approach. La esencia de la Arquitectura, a mi entender, se encuentra en la dualidad “ser no ser” que los orientales hacen evidente en la etimología misma de la palabra “vacío” (wu-ser / you- no ser). Si miramos a través de la historia, podemos comprobar cómo la concepción de algunas obras de arquitectura parte desde la preponderancia de lo “lleno”; mientras que en otras se comprueba lo contrario, la activación del “vacío” como un agente positivo en la composición. Pero ya sea en uno u otro caso, es la representación gráfica del arquitecto la que desempeña un papel fundamental poniendo énfasis en uno u otro de estos aspectos; hago referencia en particular a los croquis iniciales o a los diagramas conceptuales que no buscan la representación de un hecho real, constructivo, sino de un pensamiento como parte del proceso proyectual. Particularmente, voy a referirme a la técnica del poché y su utilización, antes y después de la enseñanza Beaux Arts, verificando incluso su vigencia en obras contemporáneas y cómo la utilización de esta técnica permite al arquitecto enfocarse de otra manera en la concepción del espacio.
