For Aquinas, the central or paradigmatic case of government is what he calls "political," as opposed to "despotic," "royal," or "tyrannical" modes. This doctrine has been renewed and developed by several contemporary philosophers, including François Daguet, John Finnis, and Francesco Viola. This article analyzes their contributions to the development of this doctrine, as well as its possible applications to contemporary political praxis. En el ámbito de lo político Tomás de Aquino no solo estudió las “formas de gobierno”, sino también los “modos de gobernar”, es decir, las diferentes formas en las que se ejercitan las acciones de gobierno. Para el Aquinate, el caso central o paradigmático del gobierno es el que llama “político”, en oposición a los modos “despóticos”, “reales” o “tiránicos”. Esta doctrina ha sido renovada y desarrollada por algunos filósofos contemporáneos, entre otros, Francois Daguet, John Finnis y Francesco Viola. Este artículo analiza sus contribuciones al desenvolvimiento de esa doctrina, así como sus posibles aplicaciones a la praxis política contemporánea.
