St. Augustine's hermeneutics is founded on a metaphorical basis, particularly the use of figurative or transposed meaning, predominantly through allegory, which reveals his passionate heart and clairvoyant mind. While these transposed meanings have persisted over time, the Augustinian passion has gradually declined with the advent of rationalist and post-rationalist modernity.
