In this sense, it reconstructs the main aspects by which Tocqueville's political liberalism distances itself from economic liberalism, which is why it corrects Habermas's interpretation of the French author's conception of despotism. Finally, based on these postulates, the article explores in what sense Tocqueville's typology of democratic despotism is portrayed in the contemporary democratic environment under the banner of a postmodern possibility that appears to surpass the Enlightenment tradition. El presente artículo explora las tensiones entre republicanismo y democracia deliberativa a la luz de los respectivos aportes de Tocqueville y Habermas. En este sentido, reconstruye los principales aspectos por los cuales el liberalismo político de Tocqueville se distancia del liberalismo económico, por lo cual efectúa correctivos en la interpretación que realizó Habermas sobre la concepción del despotismo del autor francés. Finalmente, sobre la base de estos postulados, el artículo explora en qué sentido la tipología despotismo democrático de Tocqueville se retrata en el entorno democrático contemporáneo bajo la insignia de una posibilidad posmoderna que se muestra superadora de la tradición ilustrada.
