In this sense, it reconstructs the main aspects by which Tocqueville's political liberalism distances itself from economic liberalism, which is why it corrects Habermas's interpretation of the French author's conception of despotism. Finally, based on these postulates, the article explores in what sense Tocqueville's typology of democratic despotism is portrayed in the contemporary democratic environment under the banner of a postmodern possibility that appears to surpass the Enlightenment tradition.
