Latin American cities starred, from 1970 onwards, transformations linked to the processes of fragmentation and socio-spatial segregation. In this sense, gated communities also proliferated in large and medium-sized cities, a scenario from whichMendoza was not exempt. In this article we investigate the category of residentialnenclave, focusing on the process of suburbanization of the elites on the arid foothills of the Precordillera. The empirical reference was a gated communities, Mendoza Norte Country Club, which built the first golf course in the department of Las Heras.
We resorted to the case study that allowed us to triangulate the data taken from specific bibliography, official and photographic cartographic records, MNCC online promotions, direct observation in the field during the 2017-2019 period, and informal interviews conducted during the summer of 2018 in the Challao district. We identify the importance of including the environmental dimension in the studies of residential enclaves, since when incorporating it we reveal processes of dispossession on the natural common goods of the piedmont. |
