description In today’s literary world, picture book is a genre deserving of a high number of specialist’s attention. This article aims to offer a status on this genre based on the bibliography that focuses on it as object that stimulates certain kinds of reading. The main hypotheses that we find on such bibliography are: the existence of an interconnection and interdependence of two codes (text and illustration), and the active role of the reader, who must build meaningful levels based on said interdependence. Our purpose is, therefore, to observe the diverse resources and material elements that conform a picture book and how they function, by looking at brief case-specific analyses. In its development, there will be a first part describing the characteristics that make of this a particular genre; the second part will provide clues for the reader, and the third one, will present graphic conventions aiming to facilitate its interpretation.
