description This paper presents the first results of the research project “Women in archaeology: From amateur pioneers to today’s professionals.” This line of research emerged as a concern and a need to make visible and revalue the theoretical and academic production of women in the development of anthropology and archaeology in Uruguay. Through archival research and interviews, we seek to recover the memory of women participating in field archaeology and laboratory activities, while at the same time, making visible the role of women in the production of museum collections. The project aims at disseminating and raising awareness about the legacy of women and their invisiblization in the history of archaeology. We identify several women from Uruguay and other countries who played a significant role in the development of the discipline and in the creation of the collections at national museums.
