description This paper presents a study of morphological variability of one of the domestic South American camelids, the llama (Lama glama). We assess changes in body size in 21 modern animals with measurements of four bones: proximal epiphyses of the first phalanges from the forelimb and hindlimb, proximal epiphyses of metacarpals, and the glenoid cavity of the scapula. This biometric information is analyzed in terms of the biogeographic variables, latitude and altitude, of the origin of the samples. The results show a crossover trend in which llama size increases as latitude increases and decreases as altitude increases. These clinal variations should be verified statistically with a larger sample. This information is a contribution to the knowledge of current intra-species body size variability and contributes to efforts aimed at refining camelids identifications at archaeological sites in northwestern Argentina using linear osteometric techniques based on modern specimens such as isometric scale.
