The authors show advances, transformations and trends that are taking place in this field both in Latin America and in the Venezuelan nation. Methodologically, this work is based on a documentary review of events, publications, studies, organizations and university institutions that promote SEVD-Venezuela. Also, this article gathers reflections about the accelerated progress that this modality of study has had since the last decade in the region. The authors conclude that Virtual and Distance Education is in the process of consolidation that, at the moment, is undergoing an expansion of offers of study, an increasing teacher training and a growth of the scientific production. All these elements interconnected through the universities give Venezuela an important place in Latin America with respect to the diffusion and development of virtual and distance education. El presente artículo expone los rasgos característicos del sistema de educación virtual y a distancia venezolano (SEVDV). Los autores muestran avances, transformaciones y tendencias que se están dando en esta materia tanto en Latinoamérica como en la nación venezolana. Metodológicamente, el trabajo se sustenta en un enfoque descriptivo y reflexivo a partir de una revisión crítica documental de eventos, publicaciones, estudios, organizaciones e instituciones universitarias que promueven el SEVDV. También, este artículo reúne reflexiones acerca del progreso acelerado que ha tenido esta modalidad de estudio desde la última década en la región. Para finalizar, los autores concluyen que la educación virtual y a distancia se encuentra en un proceso de consolidación que, actualmente, cuenta con la expansión de ofertas de estudio, una creciente formación del profesorado y un aumento de la producción científica. Todos estos elementos interconectados por medio de las universidades otorgan a Venezuela un lugar importante en América Latina con respecto a la difusión y el desarrollo de la educación virtual y a distancia.
