| Sumario: | I study the collection of short stories by Dainerys Machado Vento, Las noventa Habanas (2019), in conjunction with oral, visual and written archives accrued at the intersection of the temporal axis of the 1990s—known in Cuba as The Special Period in Times of Peace—with the spatial axis defined by the ninety miles separating Cuba from Florida. Through close readings centered on textual, contextual and intertextual details, this essay emphasizes both the poetics and the ethics of innovation/renovation inscribed in Las noventa Habanas.
