In the novel joy and happiness are explored in their personal and social dimensions, and are linked to reflections on life and death, the past and the present, and to memory and continuity. This paper builds upon the idea of happiness developed by Rafael Sánchez Ferlosio: as an experience, it is a temporary, provisional and ephemeral state, which is only perceived a posteriori as a flowing moment of non-suffering. In the novel, joy is a manifestation of the present that projects itself on to the communal dimension, a vital continuity that gives greater weight to the narrative over the course of many generations (History), and which in the end explains the title. Noting a connection between Soldados de Salamina and the ending of a later work by the same author, El monarca de las sombras (2017), I consider the relevance of joy as a manifestation of the pure shared present, as an affirmation, and as an impulse to the organic continuity of life. La alegría, como clave ofrecida al final de la novela, orientará la relectura de Soldados de Salamina (2001), de Javier Cercas. En su transcurso se van perfilando concepciones de la alegría y la felicidad en sus dimensiones personal y social, vinculadas a reflexiones sobre la vida y la muerte, el pasado y el presente, la memoria y la continuidad. Asumiremos la idea de la felicidad que desarrolla Rafael Sánchez Ferlosio: como experiencia, estado provisional y efímero, que únicamente es percibido a posteriori como el fluir de un instante de no sufrimiento. Por otra parte, consideraremos la alegría en una dimensión comunitaria, como continuidad vital que le da mayor espesor a la historia, considerando el transcurso de muchas generaciones (la Historia), lo que finalmente explica el título. Proponemos la sospecha de algunas conexiones de Soldados de Salamina con el final de El monarca de las sombras (2017), considerando la relevancia de la alegría como esa manifestación del presente puro compartido, como afirmación, y como impulso a la continuidad orgánica de la vida.
